Make-A-Way Corporation (MAW) was founded with a vision to combat the increasing need of affordable housing for low to moderate income families in Leon County, Marion County and surrounding rural communities. The corporation is dedicated to providing affordable, peaceful, sanitary and a safe environment to raise families. The company’s plans of action are to develop affordable housing in rural communities, revitalized distress homes and provide weatherization for low income families. In addition, the company will develop opportunities to facilitate tenants in home ownership. The corporation’s strategic focus will be to coordinate with state and federal housing partnerships, community leaders, local businesses, and dedicated individuals who share a common interest in the creation of affordable housing units and improving access to affordable housing.
The company will partnership with local housing associations to gather information to make sure the company is directly impacting the housing needs of the communities. The corporation will set aside a portion of all revitalized properties for very low- income families who are at 30 percent or less of the area-wide median income, disabled, or independent elderly.
Mission
Make-A- Way Corp. seeks to provide affordable housing and and revitilization services to low and very low income families.
Affordable Housing is in a State of Emergency
Many of the housing programs that are traditionally used to service low to moderate income household is dwindling. In fact, Congress seems to be fund fewer and fewer vouchers over the past ten years. In Florida the demand for vouchers is rapidly increasing while the vouchers availability is decreasing. Another factor affecting the need for affordable housing is the demolishing of public housing and the conversion of those units into mixed income units.(Housing Vision 3030, 2005) Furthermore, many of those units are lost due to the expiration of subsidies. Another indicator for the need for affordable is the disparity between rental availability and rental need. This is evident and impacted by Housing prices. Housing prices have increased drastically, while the average income remains the same. In addition to this dilemma as cities continually develop fewer and fewer are those developments are design to assist lower income residents. (Housing Vision 3030, 2005) Florida housing needs has continued to grow as the need for housing. (Florida Housing Trust)
According to the Florida Housing Trust a National Study Harvard University Joint Center for Housing Studies 2003 conducted by the Harvard University Joint Center for Housing Study was conducted in 2001 which reflects that 59 % of Florida Households could not afford a median priced home and 40% of those households cannot afford to pay the average rent in the state. In another report Out of Reach, the National Low Income Housing Coalition reflects that nationally there is a shortage of affordable housing to households earning minimum wage. (2010 Florida Housing)
The only way we can accomplish our mission and help to increase the availability of affordable housing is with your support. We need your help. Please do not hesitate to donate to this worthy cause.
